Why do rings exist, what types of rings are there,
and why are they so important?
History
Throughout history, rings have been purchased, given as gifts, crafted from just about every type of material known to man, and admired. Many times these little trinkets that we wear on our fingers are meant to celebrate an important event or special occasion in our lives. And just as frequently, rings are worn just for sheer adornment. People will wear rings on their Toes, Thumbs, Ears and eyes as well as belly buttons. There is literally a ring for just about every part of the Human body. These little gems can be created from just about any type of material, the list is endless. There are rings made from copper, gold, platinum; palladium, silver and even wood. They have also been manufactured from paper, string, plastic and leather. Rings can be made from anything that will fit your needs or suit your purpose. It is also very common to create a ring that will fit your budget. Many will have precious gemstones or colored gemstones on them. However if you are working with a limited budget, your gemstone choices may not be as extensive. Many colored gemstones (such as Aquamarine) can be more affordable, while precious gemstones such as Diamonds, Rubies and Emeralds are much more expensive. However, many rings will be crafted from precious metals of all types with no gemstones at all.

Unique Designs and Details
Many times these precious metal rings will have fancy designs or unique details such as Milgrain edges that may resemble tiny beads or antique embroidery. Many engagement rings or wedding bands will have custom hand carving designs that are unique to each ring. Rings with precious gemstones such as diamonds may have a very popular style referred to as micro-pave’. This will make the ring look as though it were encrusted in diamonds. Considering there are so many types of rings, let's have a look at some popular ring types.
Engagement Rings and/or wedding bands.
This is probably the most well known type of ring. Anyone who has been married or engaged, has probably owned one of these. The custom of giving rings for engagement dates back hundreds of years and is still popular in western society today. If you are going to ask that special someone to marry you, chances are you will be shopping for one or both of these. Engagement rings will often have diamonds or precious gemstones in them, whereas wedding bands will often be a plain gold or platinum band. These rings are meant to celebrate the occasion of someone's birth. Each month of the year has a different type of stone that represents their "BirthStone" 12 birthstones for 12 months of the year. They are as follows.

Promise Rings
This type of ring is typically given to a romantic partner to signify a commitment to a relationship. (prior to an engagement ring) This can be very typical of younger couples or just couples that decide not to marry. Promise rings generally tend not to be very expensive in comparison to an engagement ring. It is very common to wear a birthstone ring with a promise ring.
Rings for the body The most common of these types of rings are earrings. Obviously worn in the ears. Although there is not typically any significant meaning behind wearing earrings, they are extremely popular with both women and men. Earrings are also very popular when given as gifts. They can also have birthstones in them, just like birthstone rings for the fingers. However the most popular type of earring will have diamonds in them, such as diamond stud earrings. Many men will wear a diamond stud earring in just one ear. Many women may wear a very small diamond stud earring in their nose. This is also where there is a ring for just about any part of the body. These days it is very common for rings to be worn in or on all types of body parts. Below are some common areas of the human body that we adorn with rings. |

Nose Rings
This can be a stud earring or a hoop style ring. Several cultures may wear various sizes of hoops and in different locations on the nose. Some people may also wear multiple nose rings as a cultural symbol or statement.
Eyebrow Rings
This type of ring is usually worn as a hoop around the eyebrow. Typically the size of this ring is no larger than a ring you would wear on a finger, but again personal choice is widespread. Eye brow rings can be categorized as fashion trends, make-up enhancement and as a statement of individuality
Toe Rings
As the name suggests, this type of ring is worn on the toe. Just like other types of rings, a person may wear just one, or wear several toe rings on several toes. Toe rings usually will just consist of a plain band, or a band with some type of detail on it. In most cases, It is not typical to have precious gemstones in toe rings. This may interfere with wearing your shoes and feel uncomfortable or cause injury.
Lip Rings
The last type of ring we will cover here is the lip ring. The lip ring is gaining popularity among youth today. Lip rings will almost always be a plain gold band that is very thin. This ring is pierced through the lip, just like an earring is through the ear. Most people wear just one lip ring, although some people my choose to wear several. The most common location for a lip ring to be worn is off the side of the mouth. This way it is less likely to interfere with everyday activities, such as eating or drinking. In order to prevent infection in the mouth area, lip rings should always be kept clean. This also applies to another very popular type of body piercing known as tongue piercing. |

We recognize every type or form of jewelry is individually celebrated in one form or another. Traditional special occasion rings to fashion statements and trend setting as well as cultural symbolism.
