Glossary of Diamond Terms

When you look at the diamond. The very top flat surface of the diamond or gemstone is called the table.

When measuring a diamond it's good to have a electronic mm reader. If you do just place the diamond in there and measure how far across the table width is and divide it by the width of the girdle. Which is the center fat part of the diamond.

The overall feel of the diamond color. From the brightest of whites to the darkest of blacks. Basically just how dark or light a stone is.

It's just as it sounds. Let's say you design your own engagement ring band, the designer would take your drawing and create a template, or pattern, and trace it, than cut it, than sand it, than polish it.

Take the diamond and measure it length wise from top to the bottom of the culet. Than take the average of the width of the table. Another words measure both ways of the table and divide by two. Usually the more closer to 60% the better.

This can mean any number of things, but they all correspond to the enhancement of the diamond. There are a few ways to permanently change the color of diamond usually by high heat and pressure. The other way is to treat the clarity of diamond. This can be done with polishes, drillings, laser drilling, ejecting glass like substances into the diamond, laser burning of carbon spots, and so forth. In most cases a treated diamond will come out much better looking than what it started out as, and is commonly being used all across the world to enhance substandard clarity diamonds. All of it is legal as long as you make sure the purchaser knows about it, because it when it comes to cleaning a treated diamond you have to take a few additional precautions and steps.

If you've ever seen a diamond shaped like a triangle, than you've seen a trillion cut. Usually the triangle points to the center diamond.

There a few variations to this term however best put, is when two crystals inside the diamond form exactly the same as the other one next to it, or overlapping it causing a cloudy appearance. It's best when all crystals are different.
