| GIA
Gemological Institute of America. Think of GIA as the Supreme leader in diamond grading. The value of diamond will actually increase with an appraisal from GIA. No matter what the diamond is. It's not because the 4 C's of the diamond have changed it's just that once GIA has certified it, their word is considered the law. There are other Grading Institutes as well. Such as EGL, and many private graders. However if you go to a private diamond grader it is well advised to use a diamond grader that graduated from GIA. |
| Gem, Gemstone
A stone that once it's cut, polished, and ready to be mounted can be used as a jewel. Often referred to as a semiprecious or precious stone. |

A term used to describe what a gem or diamond ACTUALLY is! |
| Gilding
A thin layer of gold used for decorating. A process that can be used on almost all jewelry. |
| Girdle
The middle part of a diamond. Actually the outer middle part of the diamond that creates a circumference around the diamond. Often some diamond cutters make the diamond weigh more by keeping the girdle slightly bigger. Actually the smaller the depth of the girdle the better the brilliance. At least in most cases. |
Gold
If you want to get technical. Gold is a yellow precious metal with the atomic number of 79. Used primarily for jewelry and decoration, and to guarantee the value of currency. Gold is very widely distributed throughout nature. |

The process by which electrolytic deposition is done. Another words the process in which gold usually of 10k or more be fitted around any object. |

The smallest area of crystal concentrated in a structure. Usually referred to as a pinpoint. |
| Grams
The weight in which most precious metals are weighed. Example: A one carat loose diamond is .2 grams. A 5 carat diamond is 1 gram. |
| Granite
A very hard, granular, crystalline, igneous rock consisting mainly of quartz, mica, and feldspar and often used as a building stone. |
| Granulation
The process of basically taking a precious or semi-precious metal down to grains or particles, than using those grains to sand a piece of jewelry. |
| Green Diamonds
A very very rare color of Diamond. Actually referred to has a Fancy Diamond. The more bright and vivid the green the more valuable. |
