Clarity Enhanced Diamonds Explained
So If They Are Real Diamonds, Why Are They Called To explain what Clarity Enhanced Diamonds are, Let's start off with what they are NOT:
Now That I Know They Are Real Diamonds, Tell me more about "Clarity Enhanced" Diamonds? Simply put, Clarity Enhanced Diamonds are real diamonds that have been "Touched-Up" thereby "Enhancing" their clarity grade. Hence the term Clarity Enhanced. All diamonds have character flaws referred to as "Inclusions" or "Imperfections." The quantity, size and type of inclusions, is what determines a diamonds CLARITY GRADE. The Clarity Grade of a diamond is one of the 4 C's. (Very rare and Very expensive "Flawless Diamonds" are the only exception to this rule.)
If Diamonds Can Be "Touched-Up" Utilizing The Clarity Enhancement Process To Improve Their Appearance And Performance, Then Why Aren't All Diamonds Clarity Enhanced? This is a very good question and one that is easily answered. The Clarity Enhancement Process is utilized to improve the appearance and performance of diamonds with one particular type of inclusion. That inclusion is called a "Feather" and it occurs naturally in the diamond. (Just like other inclusions occur naturally) It was discovered in 1982 that by coating the "Feather" with a MICROSCOPIC AMOUNT of material, you could make the feather visually disappear. The benefit of this process is two-fold. The first benefit is not being able to see the inclusion. The second and equally important benefit is that light will be able to pass through the feather. If light is not allowed to pass through the feather, it might bounce off the feather and into an undesirable direction. This may allow light to leak out the bottom or side of the diamond, rather than properly reflecting the light from facet to facet. A facet is the surface of the diamond. They serve as tiny, light reflecting mirrors! You want the light to bounce around in the diamond until it bounces back up through the top of the diamond towards you. The clarity enhancement process allows this to happen! More light through the top of your diamond means
Clarity Enhanced Diamonds allow you to purchase a much larger diamond with a superior color grade and superior cut grade than a non-enhanced diamond, and still spend less money! It is also very important to note here that the cut of a diamond is also EXTREMELY CRUCIAL when determining the performance of a diamond. (How Much It Will Sparkle) A well cut diamond will sparkle much more than a diamond that is not cut well. Although all of the 4 C's combined are important in determining the overall beauty of a diamond, a diamond has to be cut well to have a nice "Sparkle" to it. What is Fracture Filled / Feather Filled These are small fractures in a diamond. They are usually caused by the tremendous stress that the diamond suffered while it was growing underground. In some cases the feather both begins and ends within the diamond's surface and, in other cases, the feather begins inside the diamond and extends to the surface. When viewed under magnification, some feathers are transparent and others have a light white appearance to them. The term "feather" comes from the fact that, under magnification, these fractures often seem to have an indistinct, feathery shape to them. While the idea of buying a diamond with "fractures" may sound scary, the reality is that, with normal wear and care, most feathers pose no risk to the diamond's stability. Consider this: even with the feathers, these diamonds survived their growth and their journey to the surface intact. Once on the surface, they also survived the mining process, as well as the brutal stresses of the diamond cutting process. Though diamonds are certainly not invulnerable to damage, basic consideration to their care and handling during everyday wear will most likely protect them over the course of several human lifetimes. If you have any questions after this we encourage you to call or email and we will be happy to explain it all in more detail. When you see by our descriptions of our diamond "natural diamond w/ enhanced clarity" and you see a "yes" by that diamond, it is a clarity enhanced diamond. Enhanced by either fracture filling or laser drilling. The diamond is 100% natural, but the clarity has been improved visually to the naked eye.
